Shadwell in Bloom

Monochrome image of flowers Shadwell in Bloom (SIB) was formed in October 2002 by three parish councillors, and achieved seventh place out of thirteen in their first year in Yorkshire in Bloom’s Large Village category, despite only having five months to prepare.

It has created two dozen sponsored flower beds along the length of the Village, and each summer up to ninety hanging baskets are installed and maintained along Main Street sponsored by local residents, businesses and the Parish Council. There are hayracks on the Library, and planters in various locations including the shops and bus terminus. The planting scheme is changed twice a year.

Much of the work is done by loyal and hard working volunteers who contribute to the planning of future development work, and some are involved in bed design.

SIB organizes a garden competition in partnership with Shadwell Horticultural Society, and has a presence at MayFest and Shadwell Flower Show.

Image of yellow flowers Over the years the criteria of Yorkshire in Bloom has changed and SIB must ensure that they are including all sections of the community and can demonstrate sustainability, conservation and recycling. They have become more involved at the school and have created allotments for the children and a nature garden on the school site.

Results in the competition have been good. Since YIB adopted the Royal Horticultural Society’s formula of awards, SIB has gained at least Silver Gilt every year, with Gold on one occasion when they won their category. Two of the volunteers have transformed the Garden of Remembrance at St Paul’s Church and received a special award from YIB for the work.

Working parties are held every Tuesday morning. Volunteers are always needed, and work partly on their own initiative looking after specific areas or beds at times to suit themselves.
